GC Emission of Light Emission and Elemental Flame Tests Tubes Lab Report

Chemistry 120 Note Book Guidelines

Your notebook is a real document that shows your experimental procedures and observations and as such must be presented in a way that others can view and recreate your experiments.

Here is a sampling that I will be looking for in your notebook:

  1. The notebook can be a scientific notebook that has carbonless copies so you can tear out one page and retain the original page (cost ~$20) or you can use a composition notebook and make copies of your data to submit in your lab report: however, the composition notebook must be hardbound (not loose-leaf/ spirals) (cost ~$5).
  2. You must use a pen (black or blue) to write in your notebook.
  3. Please write in 3rd person (don’t use : we, I, us, etc; use “an experiment, etc.).
  4. Do not use whiteout or scratch over mistakes- a single line through is good.

Your Notebook’s front should have the following informationon the cover:

Class (Chem 120-Fall 2019)

Your Name

Your contact info (email is best)

When you open the cover up to the pages inside the first page should be the Table Of Contents (TOC); this is your running tally where the experiment and page where it can be found is located.

After about 2-3 pages (should number the pages 1- end) This is the start of your experimental section:

Top of the page: Name and number of the experiment

Date when you started the experiment

Reference: use- Chem 120 lab manual page XXXX

Safety of the experiment

Materials used in the experiment

Concepts of the experiment

PreLab if any

Then: on the same page draw a line down the page (on the left put Procedure, Right Observations)

Procedure Observation

The Procedure section should be short and stepwise information how you are going to do the experiment. Make sure you list each and every step and give enough space for all your procedures and observations. If you have a procedure that is like ”react A,B, and C with 1,2, and 3” Please DO NOT put down “React A,B,C with 1,2,and3”!!! Procedure should be similar to: “react A with 1

React A with 2

React A with 3

React B with 1

Etc.” each reaction is given its own step.

Please do not place tables in the Obs section. Do not add/substract, multiply or dive in the Obs section. Obs is only what you can see.

THIS IS DONE BEFORE THE EXPERIMENT (the procedure); This is done doing the experiment (the Observations)

After the Experiment and Observations:

Data Analysis

Any formulas used

Any analysis

Any tables etc

Conclusion:

What was the purpose of the experiment?

What did the data indicate?

What can you conclude? Not conclude?

Post lab questions- if any
