he goal of this experiment is to determine and build the structures of a variety of molecules and polyatomic ions using a model kit.

The geometry of a molecule or polyatomic ion can be determined from its dot structure. The number of regions of electrons around the central atom dictates what the geometry will be. The hybridization explains the geometry. The dipole moment is the sum of the individual dipoles.

Experimental Procedure

Fill in the information in the table provided. Use pencil. Molecular model sets will be provided so that you can build models of each molecule or polyatomic ion.

  • Lewis Dot Structure: Be sure to show resonance here. Show ions in brackets with a charge.
  • Drawing: Show approximate bond angles accurately; if necessary show dimensionality by using dotted lines and wedges.
  • Bond Polarity: Each bond in molecule should be shown as polar or nonpolar with accompanying calculations (one only for each type of bond; i.e. you need to show the difference in electronegativity only once for a C-H bond, etc.).
  • Dipole Moment: This is the average of the dipoles in each bond in the molecule; in other words, it is the polarity for the entire molecule. This should be shown with ONE dipole arrow.
