Grab the list of items you will need. We will need a 250 mL Erlenmeyer Flask, scale, 50-mL burette, Distilled H2O, Phenolphthalein indicator, 0.110 M NaOH and Vinegar. The NaOH, Vinegar, indicator and Distilled H2O is found under solutions. The Scale is under Tools and the 250-mL Erlenmeyer Flask plus the 50-mL burette is found under glassware (the burette is listed under other). If need be, you can wait to get the 50-mL burette to save space on our workbench.One drop of Phenolphthalein is equal to 0.05 mL.If the workbench says full, you need to move things around to make space for each item. The distilled H2O takes up a bit of space and can be removed once you use it.To “Fill” something within the program, drag the vessel that has the liquid towards the vessel you want the liquid to end up in, then select the volume amount you want.When using the burette, if you right click on the burette, you can bring up the options and select “Detail View” so you can get a closer look at the mL reading.Remember to mark down the initial volume of NaOH that is added to the burette. Start with 50 mL added to the burette and mark the initial mL point of the burette. For example, if you start at 2 mL and end at 24 mL, then you used 22 mL to reach the endpoint of the titration. If you make a mistake, you can clear the workbench and start over, but you will be starting ALL the way over.Follow the instructions and perform the titration within the program. Add about 1 mL of the NaOH titrant at a time to the Erlenmeyer flask. Remember you want to stop when the solution turns pink. You only have to do one trial for the Chem Collective Vinegar. Vinegar Analysis

Note: The Molar Concentration of NaOH used for this experiment is .1116 M NaOH

In this experiment, you will determine the percent by mass of acetic acid in vinegar, using volumetric analysis. The acetic acid is titrated with a solution of sodium hydroxide whose concentration is known. A solution whose concentration is known is called a standardized solution. The balanced equation for the titration is given below:

CH3COOH (aq) + NaOH (aq) → CH3COONa (aq) + H2O (l)

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE: The experimental procedure listed below has been performed in the laboratory and recorded for your viewing for assistance. Your goal is to use the Chem Collective virtual simulation and perform the experiment below within the simulated laboratory workbench.

  1. Make sure that the 250-mL Erlenmeyer flask provided to you is clean and dry on the outside. Weigh the Erlenmeyer flask. Add about 3-mL of one brand of vinegar to the weighed Erlenmeyer flask and weigh it again. Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the solution and rinse the wall of the flask with about 20 mL of deionized water.
  2. Fill the burette with the NaOH solution, and make sure that the tip of the burette is also filled with solution. Pour about 50 mL of the NaOH solution into the burette and record the initial reading. The burette volume must be read accurately, to ±0.02 mL.
  3. Clamp the burette vertically with the tip just inside the mouth of the Erlenmeyer flask and titrate the sample of vinegar. For the titration, slowly add the NaOH from the burette, while swirling the Erlenmeyer flask with the other hand. Add about 1 mL of NaOH into the Erlenmeyer flask and continue until you near the pink endpoint.
